South Africa’s native fauna is the premier attraction at the many wildlife game reserves within the Eastern Cape. This magnificent, untouched area is malaria-free and becoming known as one of the country’s main game viewing and hunting destinations. The Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch area is well known for its prolific bird life. Favourite bird-watching venues include Settler’s Park, Cape Recife Nature Reserve with its unique bird-hide as well as the Zwartkops Estuary that boasts groups of flamingos wading in the salt pans. In addition to Happy Valley and Quarryman Park, Willow Dam and Groendal Wilderness Area in Uitenhage are also renowned for their wide variety of bird species. Another popular venue is the Sunday River Mouth, Colchester. Visitors are invited to join local experts from the Club on educational outings to Settlers Park on the first Saturday morning of each month at 08h30. Disabled birders welcomes – enjoy birding from the wheelchair friendly bird-hide.

NATURE RESERVES

Nature Reserves

From rocky shore and river estuaries to indigenous floral fynbos: from stretches of golden beaches and unspoilt sand-dunes to lush indigenous forest and untamed wilderness areas, the nature reserves within Nelson Mandela Bay offer a wide range of accessible options to the great outdoor. Located in and around the Metro environs are: Van Staden’s Wild Flower Reserve, The Cape Recife Nature, Maitlands Nature Reserve, The Island Nature Reserve, Swartkops Nature Reserve, Aloes Nature Reserve, Van Der Kempskloof Nature Reserve, Lady Slipper Nature Reserve and the Groendal Wilderness Area in Uitenhage. Another unique and noteworthy environment is the Sunday River Mouth which flows through the Alexandria Dune Fields. The Dune Fields, on the East Bank of the River, stretch 50km east towards Port Alfred and are of singular beauty.
