INTRODUCTION
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality "The five-biome city", is unique in that it:
- Hosts five of South Africa’s seven biomes – fynbos, subtropical thicket, Nama Karoo, forest and grassland biomes.
- Forms the South-Eastern corner of the Cape Floristic Region – a region renowned for its plant and animal diversity and endemism.
- Witnesses the meeting of two global biodiversity hotspots – the Cape Floristic Region and Maputaland / Albany / Pondoland.
- Boasts unique coastal and inland fynbos, as well as subtropical thicket vegetation types
Local municipalities are required in terms of the National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act, No. 10 of 2004 (NEMBA) to protect biodiversity within their municipal areas.
SERVICES
This Sub-directorate provides and renders a sustainable environmental, educational and developmental service to Nelson Mandela Bay, which includes:
- Promotion of biodiversity through the planning, development and implementation of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Open Space System (NMB MOSS).
- Administration and management of nature reserves and other natural areas.
- A vegetation control service on Council’s undeveloped open spaces or property.
- The development, implementation and coordination of environmental management systems within the Municipality.
- Provision of environmental education.
- Development and implementation of a Coastal Management Programme.
- Guiding, advising and monitoring the Municipality regarding compliance with environmental legislation and its Environmental Policy.
