HISTORY ON PARKS
VICTORIA PARK, SOUTH END

Victoria Park
On 10 FEBRUARY 1880 the land for the park at South End was transferred from H.W.PEARSON to Council.
Although land for a park was granted in 1864 in RAFANE VALE, it was found to be unsuitable, and was sold as building lots. The money made form this sale was used to buy the new land, which was part of the farm PAAPENBIESJESFONTEIN, for the park, which then became VICTORIA PARK. Although the Council initially favored a piece of land on the edge of Walmer, the citizens of the South End were vigorously opposed to it. The park was laid out in 1891/92, by J T BUTTERS, Superintendent of Parks after JOHN WILSON.
During the royal visit to this to country in 1947, the Queen had a garden tea party on the island in the centre of the big pond in the park. This position ensured that the people, who wanted to look at royal Party, could do so without getting too close to the partygoers.
Today still the Island in the pond is often the venue for weddings and photo sessions for couples getting married and the park being used for orchestra concerts and other prominent events.
