The Dirty Skirts rocked Nelson Mandela Bay for the 1st time on 24 June 2010 |
The Dirty Skirts is an alt-indie-rock band is based in Cape Town and comprises of Jeremy de Tolly on lead vocals and guitar, David Moffatt on guitar, Maurice Paliaga on bass and Mark de Menezes on drums.
Their hit single, Daddy Don’t Disco was nominated for Best Rock Album at the South African Music Awards in 2008.
I chatted with them just after their much anticipated live performance at the Nelson Mandela Bay FanFest last night.
Q. Fans have been asking for you guys to come down and rock Nelson Mandela Bay for a while now. What do you think of the City so far?
A. Fun, friendly people that respond to our music and some of them even know the lyrics!
Q. Of the FanFests you’ve played at, which has been the best so far?
A. Definitely PE, it’s been great.
Q. What are you currently up to?
A. Working on our new album. It’s going to be gigantic! Think enormous, fire-breathing, plastic (not real) dinosaur big – laughs.
Q.Where does your musical influences come from?
A. Funk, Jazz and Rock
Q. Who writes the songs?
A. We all do
Q. You guys have played overseas, can you name the best gigs?
A. Snitch in New York & Bar Fly in London
Q. Best song to sing live?
A. Mark chose “Daddy stop breathing”, David & Maurice agreed on “Wait for today” and Jeremy’s heart lies with “ Is this it.”
Q. What do you get up to in your spare time? Play some guitar hero?
A. Mark actually does. “I’ve finished it” he chirps.
Q. Are you a competitive bunch … who wins the fights?
A. Yeah, we are human. We are more competitive off-stage though. We enjoy a good game of foosball or tennis.
Q. With Bafana out of the world cup – who are you supporting?
A. Maurice (still sad bout the Italy loss) is now supporting Spain. David & Jeremy are rooting for Ghana and Mark is supporting Portugal
Q. Finally, what message do you have for your fans?
A. Thank you and watch out. Oh, and love your fellow dinosaur!
