OPERATION “VUVUZELA”

Operation VuvuzelaOn 14 October 2009, Operation Vuvuzela was carried out in Nelson Mandela Bay. This particular exercise was required by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which requests one such operation every two years. Vuvuzela was an ‘extra’ exercise, executed in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ with the objective of allowing the various emergency units in the city to test their response, preparedness and emergency procedures in the face of a major accident or trauma. It was designed to test the cohesiveness of all the units and how well they communicated and cooperated with one another.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole consists of Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch. Port Elizabeth has long been recognised for its friendly people, gorgeous stretches of pristine coastline and relaxed ambience. Port Elizabeth is one of the Host Cities for the 2010 World Cup™ that required a brand new stadium to be built in order to accommodate the influx of fans as well as the games that will be played here. There were some doubts expressed about the financing and the timing of such a stadium but, in true Nelson Mandela Bay style, this Host City has surpassed expectations in its own quiet dignity.
