SAFETY AND SECURITY DIRECTORATE

STATION COMMANDER

(FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES)

POSITION CODE: 200113

TASK Grade 12 (R408 432 – R567 852 per annum)

(Basic salary only, excluding benefits)

Qualifications and experience required:

  • At least a tertiary qualification or equivalent Graduate Diploma in Fire Technology / National Higher Certificate in Fire Technology
  • Three years’ experience
  • Valid Code EC Drivers’ License
  • Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety legislation. 

Key attributes and competencies:

  • Physically fit and able-bodied and capable of carrying objects in excess of 20 kilograms
  • Able to work in all weather conditions
  • Supervisory skills
  • Exposure to stressful situations that are physically threatening
  • Able to make decisions that have significant impact on the organisation and may have grave consequences
  • Able to work variable shifts on a twenty-four hour basis
  • Able to work standby when required
  • Communication and report-writing skills
  • Able to work overtime during specific unplanned emergencies/disasters. 

As part of selection process candidates will be required to undergo pre-employment medical examination.

Job purpose:

Co-ordinates and controls the activities of personnel assigned to a particular shift for the rendering of emergency and humanitarian services to the community for the saving/protection of life and property.

As part of the selection process, candidates may be tested on any requirement, skill or competency, which will include pre-employment screening, a medical examination, security vetting and psychometric assessment.

Fringe benefits will include membership of a Retirement Fund, Medical Aid Scheme, Group Life Assurance Scheme, participation in a Housing Subsidy and Car Schemes (subject to the conditions of the various Schemes), and normal leave and sick leave benefits.

FIREFIGHTER 1 (10 VACANCIES)

TASK Grade 7 (R225 888 – R314 064 per annum)

(Basic salary only, excluding benefits)

 

 Qualifications and experience required:

·        Appropriate level of secondary qualification plus one of the following or equivalent:     

(i)         Fire Fighter 1 and Hazardous Materials;

(ii)        Basic Ambulance course (4 weeks).

·        One years’ experience as a Trainee Firefighter.

·        Valid Code 14 drivers’ license with PrDP (Professional Driving Permit).

 Key attributes and competencies:

 

  • Must have a sense of urgency.
  • Must have firefighting skills.
  • Must have a provision of medical assistance skills.
  • Must be physical fit and able bodied, and able to carry objects in excess of 20 kgs
  • Must be able to be on standby.
  • Must be able to work overtime during specific and unplanned emergencies/disasters. 

Job purpose:

Renders emergency and humanitarian services to the community for the saving/protection of life and property. 

Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a medical test and may be assessed on any requirement or competency during the selection process.  The incumbent will be required to work a 42-hour week on a shift basis (including night shifts).
