  • July 2011 - Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, and widow of Govan Mbeki, Epainette Mbeki, paid tribute to Govan Mbeki at a memorial lecture at the Red Location Museum in July 2011. Mayor Wayile said Oom Gov left big political footprints, and that he was not an accident of history. “Govan Mbeki was a revolutionary and an intellectual. This historic memorial lecture for a revolutionary thinker like Oom Gov should be considered an analysis of where we are as a democratic society and also in which direction we are going,” said Mayor Wayile. The Red Location Museum is based in the heart of the Red Location Township, where Govan Mbeki was at his most active in the political sphere during the period of the late 1960’s.
  • The Office of the Executive Mayor played a major role in making it possible for the dance group De Ja Vu, who are from the city?s Northern Areas, to fulfil their dream of competing against the world’s best in a World Dance Competition in Las Vegas, USA in July 2011. The Office of the Executive Mayor and the Office of the Premier put in a combined effort to assist the group with their financial needs. “As a caring municipality that is committed to youth development and sports development, we could not let the dreams of these young people go to waste. We had to look for something and try to assist where we could,” said the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile.
  • In July 2011 the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality received a Green Drop award for maintaining a 98% in water quality compliance, which means it complies fully with SANS 241 (Drinking Water Quality Standards). The Municipality scored second highest in the province in water quality excellence and received the prestigious Green Drop Award for the Driftsands Wastewater Treatment Works. Mayor Wayile and Portfolio Chairperson for Electricity & Energy, Cllr Andile Mfunda, proudly accepted the prestigious award as an indication of the quality of service delivery by the Municipality.
  • July 2011 - The United States Marines paid a visit to the city last year on a combined military exercise with the South African National Defence Force called Shared Accord 2011. During their visit they facilitated various outreach programmes in the disadvantaged areas of the city. The Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, welcomed them to the city.
  • July 2011 - A former Khwezi Lomso High School learner, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, and his former classmates joined forces to donate computer equipment to their former school in the spirit of Mandela Month in July 2011. The initiative was a part of the 67 minutes of goodwill.
  • July 2011 - Another Mandela Month activity, Mayor Wayile and stakeholders spend their 67 minutes of goodwill to renovate and beautify the Missionvale Care Centre in Missionvale.
  • July 2011 - The Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism had a cleanup of the Donkin Heritage Trail for Mandela Month last year, and collected 2.5 tonnes of refuse. Mayor Wayile and 120 residents assisted with collecting litter.
  • August 2011 – The Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, signed a Service Delivery Agreement drafted by the MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, that will hold Municipalities accountable to improved and sustainable delivery of services. The Service Delivery Agreements, also signed by Speakers and Chief Whips of municipalities, is considered to be a first by a South African province.

  • September 2011 - The Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, hosted a mining forum meeting with representatives of the mining industry and the Department of Mineral Resources in September last year to build collaboration in the implementation of a high impact Local Economic Development project. The outreach was to set the principles of the working relationship between the Mining Forum and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in the implementation of the SMME Hive development project in the Motherwell community. It was agreed that the mining industry stakeholders would assist on a willing participant basis, and contribute financially towards the implementation of the SMME Hive project. The community will be the beneficiaries of the project and the collaboration of all stakeholders falls in line with the Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan.
  • September 2011 - The annual Dolphin Rally hosted at the Beachview Resort is a popular event in the city focusing on the biker community, and much of its proceeds are donated to a worthy cause. The Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, is a proud supporter of the event, along with Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism Chief Executive, Mandlakazi Skefile.
  • October 2011 - Setting the example and getting counted for the Census 2011 was the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, who said that a data collection drive was important so that government can improve the services to the public based on accurate statistics.
  • October 2011 - The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality took its first step on the journey toward ensuring a better life for the people of Chatty by delivery more than 800 houses to those in need in October 2011. Present to witness the momentous handover of houses were National Minister of Human Settlements, Tokyo Sexwale, and Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile. Mayor Wayile said the Municipality is walking the road to a better life along with the people of Chatty, and said they will not be abandoned in their time of need. “We have committed ourselves in building quality houses that will be homes and leading to better communities. Gone are the days where the government will build just a house, without ensuring the integration of all services needed by the community,” said Mayor Wayile.
It was a joyous day for housing beneficiary, Nomzi Sakhele, when she received the keys and title deed to her new home from Mayor Wayile and Minister Sexwale.
  • October 2011 - Ahead of the matric exams last year, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality hosted a prayer and motivational session as encouragement for the matriculants. The Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, who is the driving force behind the Municipality’s Education Task Team, was motivated the learners to work hard toward their exams as they are the leaders of tomorrow.
  • October 2011 - The Mayor of Oldenburg (Lower Saxony in Germany), Gerd Schwandner, and a delegation of his Head’s of Departments paid a visit to Nelson Mandela Bay in October last year and were warmly welcomed by the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile. The group was in the city to meet with business people and representatives from the Coega Development Corporation and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
  • Saturday, 22 October 2011 - To give thanks for the rain, and also to pray for the prosperity of the city, a prayer ceremony was hosted at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium where the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, Deputy Executive Mayor, Cllr Nancy Sihlwayi and Portfolio Chairperson for Infrastructure & Engineering, Cllr Andile Mfunda, were anointed by Bishop Bethelehem Nopece.
  • November 2011 - A great supporter of sport development in the city, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, showed his support to local football team, Bay Stars, ahead of a crucial match in November last year. Mayor Wayile also runs his Mayoral Cup as a flagship project of the Office of the Executive Mayor. This tournament incorporates the sporting codes of netball, soccer and rugby and promotes sportsmanship amongst various cultural groups, with the aim of promoting unity and racial integration.
  • November 2011 - Nelson Mandela Bay proved its capability as a world-class host city with the successful hosting of the historic Mandela Challenge between Bafana Bafana and Ivory Coast in November last year. Ahead of the game, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, hosted a civic dinner to welcome to the city the national leadership of the South African Football Association, including Mr Danny Jordaan, members of the Ivory Coast Football Association and other key stakeholders.
  • December 2011 – A group of emerging artists from the city launched their first compilation album, titled Best of Bay volume 1 (BOB vol1), which was sponsored by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in December last year. According to the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, the sponsorship forms part of the city’s efforts to play catch up with big cities such as Johannesburg and eThekwini in nurturing and growing a vibrant music industry.
  • December 2011 - Five cooperatives who have helped feed about 7 000 people daily since the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality started its feeding programme in August 2011 were rewarded with groceries as a token of the Municipality’s appreciation for their commitment.   • December 2011 – Nelson Mandela Bay hosted the South African Junior Chess Championships at the NMMU Indoor Sport Centre in December 2011. Mayor Wayile addressed some of the country’s sharpest minds at the opening of the tournament, since chess players are known for their opening play and gambits. Between 1 800 and 2 000 players from different age groups competed and the winners got to represent the country at the world youth chess championships.   • January 2012 - A huge tragedy struck the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in January this year when three of the city’s Councillors passed away in a car accident. The three deceased Councillors, along with 11 other Nelson Mandela Bay Councillors, were travelling to Port Elizabeth from East London after attending lectures at the Nelson Mandela Law School at the Fort Hare campus when the accident took place. The Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, lays wreaths at the scene of the accident in memory of the three Councillors.
  • January 2012 - The Municipality’s Education Task Team led by the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, and a team of Mayoral Committee members, municipal officials and representatives of the Department of Education, paid visits to various schools in disadvantaged communities in Nelson Mandela Bay at the start of this school year. Meetings were held at each of the schools to discuss the challenges, and to assess means of partnership between the spheres of government to combat some of these problems facing schools.   • February 2012 - The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Education Task Team received a generous R10 000 donation from the Boardwalk toward the uniform collection drive that seeks to provide every child in need with a uniform and school shoes. Pictured, the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, accepts the cheque for R10 000 from Emfuleni Resorts Chairperson, Bongi Siwisa, and Boardwalk CEO, Clifford Ngakane.
  • March 2012 – The official sod-turning in March this year marked the start of the development of the FAW car manufacturing plant at the Coega Industrial Development Zone, which was attended by the Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet, MEC for Economic Development Mncebisi Jonas, NMB Executive Mayor Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile and FAW and CDC Executives. The investment, valued at over R600 million, will see FAW construct a state-of-the-art truck and passenger car plant at the Coega IDZ. Jointly funded by FAW and China-Africa Fund, this investment is expected to create 500 permanent jobs during its first phase.
  • April 2012 - Another generous donation of 100 pairs of school shoes came from the Boardwalk Casino toward the Municipality’s uniform collection drive in April this year. Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, was overjoyed to collect the generous donation of school shoes from the Boardwalk?s Social Equity Manager, Peggy Mokhatla.
  • April 2012 - On behalf of the Council of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, all municipal officials and the residents of this city, the Executive Mayor personally conveyed his deepest condolences to the Fufu family after the tragic and senseless death of their beloved daughter, Lelona, who was fatally stabbed while on her way to her graduation in Grahamstown in April this year.
  • April 2012 - Mayor Wayile paid his respects to the family of the late Constable Thandiswa Bambiso, who was shot dead on the 2 April in Veeplaas. Seen here with Mayor Wayile are Bambiso’s mom, husband and three kids. Mayor Wayile said seeing those three innocent children made his heart bleed, and stressed the need to intensify the fight against crime.
  • April 2012 - At the media launch of the annual Motherwell Freedom Run in April this year was the NMB Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, with the 2011 winners and defending champions, George Tshiliza (who also won the 2011 Two Oceans Marathon) and Ntombesintu Mfunzi.
  • April 2012 - The city’s top 40 under-40 business people from the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber (NMBCC) proved their dedication to education by donating 900 pairs of shoes toward the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s uniform collection drive in April this year. At the handover were from left: Alan Barr of KPMG, Luvuyo Bangazi of Boomtown, NMB Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile and NMBBC Communications Specialist Nicole Klokow.
  • April 2012 - A breakfast briefing was held at the Radisson Blu in April to engage with the business sector as part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s strategy to form strategic partnerships in pursuance of the institutions developmental goals.   • April 2012 - A delegation from the Nelson Mandela Bay’s sister city of Jacksonville in the United States of America paid a visit to the city in April to donate a mobile clinic to the community of Chatty, and also to make a donation of R1 600 towards the Education Task Team’s uniform collection drive. Handing over the donation and a gift to Mayor Wayile was Jacksonville sister city group members, from left: Pam Quarles, Tina Daniels and Steve Manis.
  • April, 27 2012 – To celebrate Freedom Day, Mayor Wayile spent the day at the Motherwell Freedom Run Road Race which he also adopted as a flagship event of the city. With Mayor Wayile are the male winners for 2012, from left: Lindikhaya Mthangayi (2nd place), Lungisa Mdedelwa (1st place) and Nkosinathi Madyo (3rd place).
  • May 2012 – The Executive Mayor met with a group of amazing patriots who were on The Big Autism Thing, a walk along the coastline from Durban to Cape Town to raise awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorders and funds for organisations that work with people on the spectrum. The walk started in Durban on 31 March 2012 and ended in Cape Town on 9 June 2012.
  • May 2012 - A fruitful meeting was hosted at the Cleary Park Shopping Complex in May between the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, and Northern Areas business people to improve working relations going forward. The session was to forge closer working relations and also to deal with issues that affect businesses in the area. The interactive sessions was also extended to Councillors of the Northern Areas, who met with Mayor Wayile as part of his programme to revitalize the Mayoral offices in Cleary Park and Uitenhage.
  • July 2012 - The Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, handed over donations to more than 100 charities in July as part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Grant-In-Aid programme. This programme seeks to assist non-governmental organisations, sport associations and educational institutions as a necessary financial boost to their programmes within the various communities that they serve.   • July 2012 - The Department of Public Works MEC, Thandiswa Marawu, handed over a land parcel in Kuyga to NMB Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, to be used for housing development as part of the Mandela Month activities in July.
  • July 2012 - NMB Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, celebrated with Manchester Babes soccer team players after their win over the Continental Express in the Mayoral Cup Challenge female soccer finals. The Mayoral Cup Challenge was first launched in 2010, and incorporates the sporting codes of soccer, rugby and netball. “The Mayoral Cup is an instrument to transform our society, and to integrate our communities. In future we hope to introduce services at the Mayoral Cup that is development and adding to the upliftment of the community,” said Mayor Wayile.
  • September 2012 - A service delivery workshop was hosted by the Municipality in September for Mayoral Committee members, Councillors and senior municipal officials to assess the current state of service delivery in the city. The Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, announced that monthly meetings will be held to assess the progress made and interventions needed when it came to service delivery. Also present at the workshop was Deputy Executive Mayor, Cllr Nancy Sihlwayi, who said the time had come for the leadership to have a good look at the type of service delivery that they are giving to the people of the city.
  • September 2012 - The National Book Week was hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay in September and messages of support came from the highest level of government to promote the importance of reading. Attending the launch at the Babs Madlakane Hall were from left: NMB Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, Arts & Culture Minister, Paul Mashatile, Sports, Arts & Culture MEC, Xoliswa Tom and Ward Councillor, Monde Vaaltyn. Books were also donated to some of the city’s libraries.
  • The annual Northern Arts Festival was held in September and was attended by an estimated 30 000 people over four days. The festival is based in the Northern Areas of Nelson Mandela Bay and seeks to promote arts, culture and local talent. The Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, attended the media launch and showed his support for the festival, also announcing that the Office of the Executive Mayor will contribute financially toward the success of the event.
  • October 2012 - Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, joined the Municipality’s Expanded Public Works Programme and members of the Education Task Team to distribute school uniforms and stationery to learners in need at the Malabar Primary School in October. The children who received uniforms, shoes and stationery were Malabar Primary School victims of a bus crash on 26 June this year, children who lost their belongings in a fire in Walmer and orphans from New Brighton who were living in child-headed homes. The uniform handover is an extension of the Municipality’s Education Task Team’s uniform collection drive that took place earlier this year.   • October 2012 - The Local Government and Traditional Affairs Minister, Mr Richard Baloyi, along with the department’s provincial MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane, joined NMB Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, on a visit to Nelson Mandela Bay in October to take stock of service delivery challenges facing the city. The inter-governmental relations approach was to facilitate faster delivery of services to communities, such as Walmer Gqebera, who are faced with infrastructural and housing backlogs.
  • November 2012 – The Orange Africa Cup of Nations comes to Nelson Mandela Bay in January 2013, and the build-up to the event has picked up with a trophy tour stopping by in the city in November. Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, took the time to view the iconic Afcon trophy at the Greenacres Shopping Centre.
  • November 2012 - The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in partnership with Statistics South Africa is conducting a registration drive for backyard shack dwellers across the city as from November this year. A pilot phase of the project kicks off in certain wards this year, and next year a full rollout of the project will take place, covering the entire Nelson Mandela Bay region. The Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, asked residents to exercise cooperation and honesty when approached for information.
  • November 2012 – The Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, and Deputy Executive Mayor, Cllr Nancy Sihlwayi, joined the NMBM’s Education Task Team to hand over school uniforms to learners in Uitenhage and Despatch in November. The uniform handover is an initiative developed by the Executive Mayor and the Municipality’s Education Task Team to ensure that every child in need is given a school uniform and school shoes.
  • November 2012 - More than 1 000 community members in November celebrated their employment which was created by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality as part of its Expanded Public Works Programme, which aims to create work for community members through projects in their area. As part of the EPWP launch, the delegation, which included the Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, and Portfolio Chairperson for Infrastructure and Engineering, Cllr Andile Mfunda, visited Qaphelani Primary and Lamani Primary Schools on an inspection of the renovation work carried out by the employees of the Expanded Public Works Programme.

  • December 2012 - More than 3 000 children were treated to a Christmas party by the Motsepe Foundation at Nangoza Jebe Hall in December. The Motsepe Foundation is a charity organisation founded and funded by businessman and Sundowns soccer club owner, Patrice Motsepe. The Executive Mayor, Cllr Zanoxolo Wayile, assisted Motsepe Foundation representative, Sandile Langa, to hand out toys to some of the children.
