The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has kickstarted community engagement meetings with the flood affected victims, with the first taking place in Walmer township on Wednesday, 24 July 2024.
The purpose of the meetings is to keep residents updated on the latest developments in relation to the relocation of affected residents to temporary shelters.
Deputy Executive Mayor, Cllr Babalwa Lobishe together with Ward 4 councillor Nozuko Thys led the meeting on Tuesday.
Deputy Mayor Lobishe said in the interest of transparency and good relations between the Metro and its residents the Metro was committed to keep residents updated about the developments.
"While the temporary shelters are ready for occupation, we are in the final stages of electrifying the structures before we can be able to allow the residents to move in, however these updates are important so that we are all on the same page and move together until the situation is back to normal," Cllr Lobishe said.
She added that the Metro remained committed to deliver services to all residents, more especially the vulnerable.
"We will continue to hold these engagements with the residents, next week we are going to Lapland informal settlement where we will be updating the flood affected residents. It is our aim and hope that these processes run as smoothly as possible so
that we can close this chapter of the disaster," she said.
Ward 4 residents have welcomed the fruitful engagement.
Resident Gcotyelwa Mdolomba from Airport Valley said: "Until now the Municipality and other stakeholders have really been trying to ensure that we are safe from the time we were moved to the temporary facilities. Our main prayer right now is that the processes could move faster because the situation is manageable when there is no rain but as soon as it starts raining we become miserable. We have renewed hope following the meeting.”
