ARRESTING CRIME IN NELSON MANDELA BAY

Published: September 13, 2024

<< BACK TO NEWS
Nelson Mandela Bay's crime levels have reached pandemic proportions and the Executive Mayoral Committee and I, in collaboration with the South African Police Services and other anti-crime stakeholders, are doing everything we can to arrest the situation.

As you know, crime has major negative implications for trade, investment, education, health, sport, recreation, and our communities' livelihoods. As the political leadership of the City, we are well aware that crime is an outcome of socioeconomic conditions, and our solution set is thus multifaceted. Our immediate priority is to decisively arrest the crime-wave so that we allow no space for criminals to operate.

The key factor in achieving this objective, is the community of Nelson Mandela Bay. To this end, I shall be spearheading an intensive community engagement drive over the next two weeks, so that, together, we can stop crime in our communities.

At each session we will outline the joint operational plans we have, the measures that we are currently executing on your behalf, and we shall solicit your input, intel and advice, and incorporate these into the broader Nelson Mandela Bay Anti-Crime Plan.

Thus far, I am happy to announce that we have undertaken the following actions:
* Initiated an emergency tender for Multi-Security Vehicle (MSV) repairs
* The Shotspotter program, which is an innovative state-of-the-art technological system that enables surveillance, detection, location, and alerts law enforcement agencies of potential gunfire incidents in real time.
* For now, we will deploy the system in prioritized crime hotspot areas, including Helenvale, Gelvandale, New Brighton, Motherwell, KwaZakhele and Kariega
* We have established a fully-fledged Joint Operations Centre, including our own Metro Police and SAPS with specific targeted hotspots.
* Formulated the Integrated Anti-Crime Plan.
* Initiated the procurement process for new armoured personnel carriers.
* We are signing a National Cooperation Agreement between the National Police Services and our Metro Police.
* Vacancies within the Safety & Security Directorate have been prioritized, and HR processes are underway in this regard.
* We shall be providing standby auxiliary safety personnel.
* There will be an Anti-Crime Blitz on a weekly basis, targeting hotspot areas.
* As we approach the tourism season, more than 100 cameras shall be installed in Central and at the beachfront.
* Public engagement meetings to get information on the ground and provide feedback to the public especially in the hotspot areas.

As the community of Nelson Mandela Bay, you must know that these plans and initiatives can only be successful if they are carried out in conjunction with you. Our residents are our eyes and ears on the ground, and we appreciate your collaboration with us as we seek to remove the scourge of crime in our city.

Over the next day or two, I will announce the Community Engagement Program. We encourage all residents and stakeholders to please attend these sessions and participate fully, so that, together, we make Nelson Mandela Bay a safe, secure and prosperous city of choice.
