A 27-year-old man was arrested on Friday, 17 November 2023, after his failed attempt to bribe Metro Police officers during a crime prevention operation in Motherwell.

The man was a passenger in a car that was stopped during the operation on Addo Road where upon investigation and verification it was uncovered that he does not have legal documentation as a foreign national in the country.

NMBM Metro Police Acting Commissioner, Advocate Moses said: "During the operation it was discovered that the suspect had entered and remained in the country illegally in terms of Section 49 (i)(a) of immigration Act 13 of 2002. He offered our officers a bribe and insisted that one of them takes the money and make a plan so that they can proceed to work. He was detained at Swartkops SAPS and is facing two charges, one for bribery and the other for being in the Republic illegally.”

"The good work of our officers is commended. They effected an arrest of an illegal foreigner and honoured their oath of office by not accepting a bribe but rather arresting the offender. Well done to them, this is a strong message to say we will not be corrupted as NMBM Metro Police. We still serve with pride.”

Ends.
