DID YOU KNOW? | HUMAN RIGHTS MONTH 2026
South Africa commemorates Human Rights Month under the theme "The Bill of Rights at 30 – Making Human Dignity Real.” This month encourages all citizens to reflect on the country’s journey toward equality, justice and freedom for all.
During the apartheid era (1948–1994), many South Africans lost their lives while fighting against injustice. One such event was the Bantu Square Massacre, also known as Black Sunday, which took place on 9 November 1952 in East London during the Defiance Campaign.
On that day, police opened fire on protestors, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 8 to more than 200 people. The tragedy remains a painful reminder of the human rights violations that occurred under apartheid.
As we mark 30 years of the Bill of Rights, we honour those who sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today and recommit ourselves to building a society based on human dignity, equality and freedom.
