LAUNCH OF CENTRAL CONTROL ROOM
Published: December 21, 2006<< BACK TO NEWS
The dedicated law enforcement team for the CBD, Central and the Southern and Northern beachfront areas will report for duty at the South End fire station to mark the launch of the Central Control Room which will be based at the fire station.
The team consists of traffic officials, security officials, members of the Police and volunteers.
The Central Control Room, which will monitor the CCTV cameras within the CBD and along the beachfront, forms part of the Security Master Plan for Nelson Mandela Bay, including Uitenhage and Despatch.
The first three cameras in the CBD, as well as three along the Humewood and Summerstrand beachfront, have been installed and are operational, says Safety and security Manager Howard Hans.
He said these cameras would assist in monitoring identified crime "hotspots" in the CBD and beachfront areas.
"An additional 25 cameras, linked with the control room, are being installed in the CBD as part of the extending of the communications network.
"These cameras will be in Govan Mbeki Avenue, including the area around the Belvia Hotel, Russel Road, Strand Street, Chapel Street, Donkin Reserve, Parliament Street and Western Road," Hans said.
This will enable the control room to communicate with security officers and response units to react immediately when incidents happen.
"As crime patterns and crime hotspots are identified, these areas will be assessed for the installation of cameras for effective monitoring.
"A professionally monitored Control Room facility is essential to ensure that the cameras are fully effective in assisting with the prevention of crime, to assist with the apprehension of criminals in action and, through the use of video footage, identify criminals later if they had not been apprehended at the time of the incident," Hans said.
