Hope and dreams revived during two-day Netball World Cup trophy tour in NMB

Nelson Mandela Bay was abuzz with netball activities during the two-day Netball World Cup trophy tour which started on Sunday, with hundreds of young girls excited and inspired to fulfill their dream of playing for the SA national team one day.
The tour which started in KwaNobuhle, Kariega saw the young and old, men and women, putting their hands up in celebration and engaged in activities ahead of the much anticipatedNetball World Cup tournament taking place in Cape Town from 28 July to 6 August 2023.
The activities included matches, coaching clinics and training equipment handover to various clubs.
Welcoming the trophy on behalf of NMBM from the Sarah Baartman DistrictMunicipality, Mayoral Committee Member responsible for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Cllr Bassie Kamana said the Metro was honoured to have been part of history and ensuring residents get a glimpse of the prestigious trophy during the tour.
On Sunday, the trophy toured the areas of KwaNobuhle, Motherwell, New Brighton, Gelvandale and Young Park.
NMBM Executive Mayor, Cllr Gary van Niekerk said the tour was important for the upcoming netball stars as it is a reminder that their dreams are valid.
"It has been an amazing two days in our City with lots of activities and excitement as our young girls get to play the sport they love and see how far netball can take them. We are excited that there will be public viewing areas for the World Cup matches where people can watch the games and our communities can once again be united through sport. The National Department of Sport has also indicated that atleast two netball courts will be developed in our Metro soon so that our children can be busy with sports and not negative activities,” said Mayor Van Niekerk.
Liyema Mabuya, 15, from Motherwell said the tour had been eye-opening for her as she had a dream of playing of the Proteas team one day.
"I am really inspired by NomfundoMngomezulu, she is my role model. We will be watching and supporting them all they way. We have been told that is the first time the trophy is in our country and like everyone else we really want them to win so the trophy can remain here.”
Residents
are encouraged to support the Proteas and take part in the netball Fridays
campaign by wearing the netball World Cup t-shirts or sporting gear.
