When mist or smoke reduces your visibility:
- Slow down immediately
- Turn on your headlights (use low lights if available, but avoid high beams as they reflect light and reduce visibility)
- Keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead
- Stop if visibility becomes too poor, pull over safely and wait until conditions improve

POWER OUTAGE UPDATE – NEWTON PARK
Tuesday, 19 May 2026
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality wishes to update residents the power outage affecting parts of Newton Park and surrounding areas.
Operators attended to the fault and investigations were conducted. Supply has since been restored to all affected customers, except for customers supplied by the Alexander Road Mini Substation, which remains off due to an existing cable fault and no available means of back feeding.

Operators are currently on site attending to the fault and conducting the necessary investigations and repairs.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality wishes to inform residents that a section of the Motherwell North 22kV line is currently out of commission from pole structure MWN 90/1 to MWN 90/21. This outage is due to the replacement of a faulty transformer located at pole MWN 90/6/5.
Technical teams are currently on site attending to the fault and carrying out the necessary repairs.

POWER & SERVICE DELIVERY UPDATE

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is currently responding to widespread service disruptions caused by the heavy rainfall and strong winds experienced across the Metro. Our teams are working under difficult conditions and remain committed to assisting affected communities as quickly and safely as possible.
The severe weather has resulted in:
* Flooding at sewerage pump stations
* Damage to homes in certain areas
* Damaged electricity poles and affected power cables
Electricity updates:
* Power supply to NU11 has been successfully restored
* Notsholo remains without electricity as teams continue fault-finding and repair work
* Technicians are currently on site in NU13
* A transformer fire in Mbayisa was attended to by Fire Fighters, however the area is still without electricity at this stage
We understand the frustration and hardship these outages and weather conditions are causing for residents and families. Please be assured that all reported electricity-related cases are receiving attention, and our teams continue to work around the clock to restore services where possible.
We sincerely thank residents for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during this challenging time. We also urge everyone to remain cautious and prioritise their safety.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality warns the public of a scam currently in circulation where fraudsters have altered a municipal notice and ABSA banking confirmation content to look official, falsely claiming that payments can be made into an alternate bank account.
The Nelson Mandela bay Municipality’s banking details have NOT changed.

Residents are advised that the South African Weather Service has issued a Level 1 warning for damaging winds affecting the following areas:

Strong south-westerly winds, with gusts of up to 88km/h, are expected as a cold front passes south of the region.

* Disruptions to transport routes and travel services
* Localised power and communication interruptions
* Damage to temporary structures
