NELSON MANDELA BAY ACTS SWIFTLY TO ADDRESS URGENT NEEDS IN GROGRO

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has prioritised addressing the challenges faced by the Grogro informal settlement by establishing a multi-departmental task team, led by the Office of the Executive Mayor, to develop short-, medium-, and long-term plans to address the needs of the Grogro community.

It is important to note that residents of Grogro are currently living on privately owned land at Kragga Kamma. This has posed significant challenges for the Municipality in providing services or initiating formal housing development, as negotiations with the landowner regarding the purchase of the land are still ongoing.

Since 2022, the Municipality has been engaging with the landowners with the aim of acquiring the property. While these negotiations continue, efforts are also underway to explore alternative land parcels. However, it must be emphasised that the community has expressed a strong preference to remain in their current location rather than be relocated.

A delegation comprising Municipal leadership and senior officials held a community engagement on 17 October 2025 to engage with residents and provide feedback on the progress of the land negotiations. It was agreed during this engagement that regular meetings will be held every seven days to keep both parties updated on developments.

Residents have also highlighted the urgent need for essential services such as electricity and sanitation, of which the Municipality committed to find viable solutions whilst working closely with the community to address their concerns.
