NELSON MANDELA BAY MUNICIPALITY REMAINS ON HIGH ALERT AMID INCREASED VELD FIRE INCIDENTS

Published: January 06, 2026

<< BACK TO NEWS
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality continues to experience an increased number of runaway veld fires since December 2025, primarily as a result of hot, dry and windy summer conditions that prevail across the Metro during this period.

These natural weather conditions significantly elevate fire danger levels, allowing fires to spread rapidly and unpredictably once ignited. Areas most affected include open veld, road reserves and sections adjacent to residential communities, placing pressure on emergency resources and posing risks to property, infrastructure and public safety.

Despite these challenges, the Municipality confirms that its Fire and Emergency Services have been successfully managing and containing incidents, with teams remaining on high alert. Resources have been strategically positioned, operational readiness has been heightened, and coordination with relevant stakeholders remains in place to ensure swift response times.

While the primary drivers of these fires are natural weather conditions, the Municipality urges residents not to add to the burden faced by emergency services. Responsible behaviour by the public can significantly reduce the risk of fires escalating into major incidents.

Residents are therefore strongly appealed to avoid:
  • Open flames and the careless disposal of cigarette butts.
  • Illegal burning of waste or vegetation.
  • Uncontrolled braais and recreational fires, particularly during windy conditions.
Communities are further encouraged to clear dry vegetation around their properties, remain vigilant, and immediately report any signs of smoke or fire.

Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe has appealed to residents to be vigilant, alert, and cooperative during this period.

"The current hot, dry, and windy conditions create an environment where fires can spread extremely quickly. While these conditions are beyond our control, irresponsible actions are not. I appeal to all residents to act responsibly and avoid behaviours that could ignite fires and place lives, property and our emergency personnel at risk.”

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality reiterates its commitment to safeguarding residents, protecting the environment, and maintaining a high state of readiness throughout the summer season. Public cooperation remains essential in ensuring that veld fires are prevented where possible and managed effectively when they occur.
