The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality alerts residents to a severe weather advisory issued by the South African Weather Service, valid from 00:00 on Sunday, 8 February 2026 until 23:59 on Tuesday, 10 February 2026.
According to the advisory, a cut-off low pressure system accompanied by a surface trough and high-pressure ridge is expected to bring widespread showers and thundershowers across the Eastern Cape, including Nelson Mandela Bay. Rainfall accumulations of 50–120 mm are possible in some areas, particularly south of the escarpment.
These weather conditions present a high risk of localised flooding, especially in low-lying areas, informal settlements, and locations with poor drainage. Soil saturation from previous rainfall increases the likelihood of flooding and infrastructure strain.
Residents are advised that the following risks are possible during this period:
- Flooding of roads, bridges and residential areas.
- Temporary isolation of communities
- Danger to life.
- Damage to homes, vehicles and municipal infrastructure.
- Possible disruption to electricity and communication services.
Storms may also be accompanied by hail, strong winds, and heavy downpours, which could intensify hazards.
The Municipality strongly urges all residents to take precautionary measures:
- Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or fast-flowing streams.
- Avoid unnecessary travel during storm activity.
- Monitor official weather updates via radio and verified social media platforms.
- Move valuable items and essential documents to elevated areas.
- Identify safe shelter in case of sudden flooding.
Municipal emergency and disaster response teams are on alert and will continue monitoring conditions closely.
Residents are encouraged to report emergencies through official municipal channels and respective ward councillors.
The safety of residents remains the Municipality’s highest priority. Community cooperation is essential to reduce risk and protect lives. More information and updates will be provided upon further guidance by the South African Weather Service.
Residents are encouraged to use varifiable information and official sources by staying tuned to South African Weather service updates and government official communication.
