The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) continues to make significant progress in transforming public open spaces previously used as illegal dumping sites into safe, inclusive, and child-friendly parks, reinforcing its commitment to community development, environmental sustainability, and improved quality of life.
Building on the successful development of 18 parks in the 2024/2025 financial year, the Municipality has, in the current 2025/2026 financial year, identified 17 additional public open spaces for strategic upgrading.
These projects are funded through two key grants: the Urban Settlements Development Grant (USDG) and the Informal Settlements Upgrading Partnership Grant (ISUPG).
In the current financial year.the milestone has been the completion and handover of two ISUPG-funded projects, Kingston Park and Middle Park. Previously characterised by illegal dumping and unsafe conditions, these spaces have been transformed into vibrant recreational hubs, providing safe areas where children can play, learn, and develop.
Through the good project management with the Parks and Cemetery Sub-Directorate, the Municipality has demonstrated strong financial performance across both grant streams.
The Municipality has spent a total of R15,415,005.16 out of a combined allocation of R22,275,210.00, representing an overall expenditure and implementation progress of approximately 69% across both grant funded projects.
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe said the conversion of illegal dumping areas into safe parks for children is talking to the sustainable development agenda of the Municipality.
"Through this project we are beating two birds with one stone, addressing illegal dumping while securing safe spaces for our children and promoting healthy lifestyles. Some of these facilities have got exercising equipment that helps promote health within the area where the park is,” said Executive Mayor Lobishe. The development of these parks is guided by four key pillars that directly benefit children and families:
- Safety and Infrastructure: Installation of perimeter fencing and paved walkways ensures secure and accessible environments for play.
- Environmental Sustainability: Tree planting initiatives contribute to climate change mitigation while creating shaded, livable spaces.
- Youth Development: Modern playground equipment encourages active outdoor play and supports early childhood development.
- Health and Wellness: Outdoor gym facilities promote healthy lifestyles for residents of all ages.
The Municipality is also encouraged at the contrition that these grant funded projects have done in empowering the SMME companies and the creation of employment during the construction phases.
The Municipality calls on residents to partner in protecting these vital community assets as the challenge of vandalism continues to affect development across the Municipality.
