Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe has expressed her gratitude for the patience and understanding shown by residents and businesses across the Metro while the Municipality faced severe water shortages due to a number of challenges within the water distribution system.

The Municipality can now report that water supply has been re-established in the previously affected Tyreville, Kamesh and KwaDwesi/Lapland areas following intensive work by municipal teams over the past two to three weeks.

The improvement in supply is a result of more consistent inflows from both the Kabah and Nooitgedagt water schemes after recent challenges caused by high turbidity levels were resolved.

While the municipal water distribution system remains under pressure due to ongoing demand across the city, water distribution has been restored in almost all areas, except for parts of Motherwell.

"We continue to monitor the system. Although it remains under pressure due to high consumption, we can safely say that the worst is behind us. We would like to apologise to our residents and businesses, and we fully understand the impact that the water outages have had on their daily lives," said Mayor Lobishe.

In as much as there has been a significant improvement to the water distribution system, residents and businesses are advised that planned repair work on the Churchill Pipeline will commence in the early hours of Wednesday, 24 June 2026. Additional maintenance and upgrade work will also be carried out at St George's Reservoir during the same shutdown period.

The work is expected to continue throughout the day, with the Churchill Pipeline anticipated to be brought back into operation on 25 June 2026.

As a result of the shutdown, inflows to both Struandale Reservoir and St George's Reservoir will be affected. To minimise the impact on residents, reservoir storage levels are currently being maximised in preparation for the planned work.

"As a Directorate, we continue to work hard to invest more resources in maintenance and strengthen our technical capacity to avoid recurring challenges. We plead for the understanding of our residents and call on everyone to use water sparingly, as refurbishment and maintenance work sometimes disrupts distribution and places additional pressure on the system," Executive Mayor Cllr Lobishe added.

The Municipality thanks residents for their patience and continued cooperation as efforts to stabilise the water supply system continue.
