R52.9 MILLION BOOST FOR SANITATION PIPELINE UPGRADES

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has set aside R52.9 million in the 2026/27 financial year to improve the ageing sanitation pipeline network in the northern and southern areas of the Metro.

The work will include the renewal and rehabilitation of sanitation pipelines to reduce the risk of sewage spills and pipe bursts, which have a serious negative impact on the environment and the well-being of residents.

The pipeline network serves the following areas:

Northern Areas: Motherwell, one of the largest residential areas in the Metro situated along the Coega Special Economic Zone, as well as Bethelsdorp, Bloemendal, KwaDwesi, KwaMagxaki, Bluewater Bay and Amsterdamhoek.

Southern Areas: Summerstrand, Humewood, South End, the Central Business District (CBD), Walmer, David Stuurman International Airport, Schoenmakerskop and Seaview.

This multi-million-rand infrastructure project will be implemented over a three-year budget cycle, with a total investment of approximately R161 million.

"This is a clear demonstration of our resolve to grow this City and place it in a position to provide quality services while ensuring that we are able to accommodate future economic growth. Through our Integrated Development Plan (IDP) processes, we have listened to the concerns raised by residents and the business community.

Many of these challenges relate to sanitation infrastructure. We understand that parts of our sanitation network are ageing and, in some instances, no longer adequately accommodate our growing population and expanding industries. This investment is our direct and intentional response," said Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe.

The renewal and rehabilitation of these pipelines will run parallel with the intensive work currently underway to refurbish and upgrade the Municipality's wastewater treatment works. These upgrades are aimed at ensuring the facilities comply with current regulatory standards while increasing capacity to accommodate higher wastewater flows resulting from population growth and industrial expansion in areas such as Motherwell, Markman, the Coega Special Economic Zone and the Northern Areas.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure and Engineering, Councillor Buyelwa Mafaya, said her office will closely monitor the implementation of these projects through political oversight to ensure that work is completed within the stipulated timeframes.

"The issue of timeframes and expenditure is critical. We must work with precision and urgency to ensure that every cent allocated to these projects is spent responsibly and delivers the best possible value for money," said MMC Mafaya.
