STATE OF THE NATION ADDRESS BEING BROUGHT TO, AND DEBATED BY, THE PEOPLE OF NELSON MANDELA BAY

President Thabo Mbeki’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) will be made accessible to, and debated by, the people of Nelson Mandela Bay when the Address is screened live at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in Nelson Mandela Bay, on Friday, 8 February 2008.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, working together with Government Communications & Information Systems (GCIS) and the Eastern Cape Office of the Premier (OTP), has arranged a special screening, and a group of panelists representing business, labour, civil society and academics will analyse and discuss the President’s Address. Among those invited to serve on the panel are:

• Mr Bobby Stevenson, Democratic Alliance

• Dr Deon Pretorius, Social Development

• Prof Derrick Swartz, Vice-Chancellor & Principal, NMMU

• Prof Gavin Bradshaw, Conflict Resolution, NMMU

• Mr Kaya Matiso, NMMU

• Mr Irvin Jim, Labour

• Ms Jane Stevenson, Business Women’s Association

• Mr Jimmy Gotyana, SANGOCO Regional Chairperson

• Mr Kutloano Headbush, NAFCOC Nelson Mandela Bay

• Mr Odwa Mtati, PERCCI CEO

• Mr Rory Riordan, Dojon Financial Services

• Mr Xola Ngcangca, Nelson Mandela Bay Youth Council Chairperson

School learners and members of the public will also participate in the discussion. The effort is part of government’s drive to encourage participatory democracy and empower residents on government’s Programme of Action (PoA).
