The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is pleased with the work in progress along the M4 Settlers Freeway and Sidon Street, where contractors are working tirelessly to fix fallen road barriers, road signs and road markings.

Ward 5 Councillor Sandile Rwexana conducted a site visit to witness the progress made with the project. He was joined by NMBM Senior Superintendent of Roads and Stormwater, Xoliswa Nqakula and Rapid Response Task Team Coordinator, Zonile Ndoni.

Cllr Rwexana said that the City is committed to attend to service delivery complaints and monitor the progress made through sit visits. "We normally do site visits, especially when there are service delivery complaints. As public representatives, more especially Ward Councillors, we have an oversight duty to ensure that the Municipality is doing what the community wants.

"There are certain processes in the Municipality that need to be followed during service delivery. There are sometimes complaints that the pace of the Municipality is slow. But the workers are turning the corner, trying to fix what must be done and to prioritise service delivery projects within this financial year.

"Officials do understand the urgency of service delivery issues, especially those that could potentially save lives. Installing guard-rails along the M4, which is a busy tourist thoroughfare, will avoid accidents and save lives.”

Senior Superintendent of Roads and Stormwater, Xoliswa Nqakula, said that they received the guard-rail complaint a week ago. "To attend to complaints, internal processes must first be followed: a C1 Form must be completed, a quotation must be obtained, tender ID is created, an order number is issued, and then Letters of Award are issued”.

"Those processes are still taking place. We also had the issue of equipment supply: stock became available today only. Our main goal is to prioritise lives and safety when attending to complaints. The M4 Freeway from Summerstrand and the N2 going to Summerstrand are critically important routes and hence the ongoing emphasis on fixing the missing or faulty guard-rails along them.”
